Sinaloa and Spanish fisheries implement new fish restocking strategies
In Sinaloa, Mexico, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development and the state government have agreed on measures to boost the profitability of the agricultural and fishing sectors. A key component of this strategy includes addressing 23 requests to restock continental water bodies with two million tilapia fingerlings.
Officials, including Columba Jazmín López Gutiérrez and Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava, are implementing a long-term strategy involving credits, technical assistance, and direct inputs. This includes support for mango producers and shrimp packers, as well as the launch of a platform for the transparent acquisition of basic inputs for corn and wheat to reduce production costs.
In Spain, the Fuentes del Narcea fishermen's association has launched a trial in the Narcea River to test a different restocking method. Unlike traditional methods that release fingerlings, this study involves releasing older trout, approximately two years of age, to monitor their evolution. The goal is to determine if releasing older fish leads to more effective population increases in rivers, addressing concerns that previous restocking efforts have not successfully increased fish populations.
