Aquaculture and fisheries management initiatives

Efforts to bolster aquaculture and fisheries management have emerged across Mexico, Honduras, and Spain.

In Mexico, initiatives have focused on both restocking and production. In Sinaloa, government officials agreed to restock continental water bodies with two million tilapia fingerlings as part of a broader strategy to increase sector profitability. Additionally, in Hidalgo, the “El Barranquito” aquaculture pond project was launched to provide income opportunities for migrant families through tilapia breeding.

In Honduras, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock is investing 2.5 million lempiras to reactivate the El Carao National Research Center. This project aims to increase the production of gray and red tilapia fingerlings to lower costs for local producers.

In Spain, the Fuentes del Narcea fishermen's association is conducting trials in the Narcea River. This study tests the effectiveness of releasing older trout, approximately two years of age, rather than traditional fingerlings, to address concerns regarding the success of previous restocking efforts.
