Sincan Municipality bans bag-sealing practice at supermarket
Sincan Municipality in Ankara has ordered a chain supermarket to cease a security practice that involved taping customers' bags shut and requiring them to be stored in lockers upon entry. The measure, implemented by the retailer to prevent theft, was challenged by shoppers through municipal tip lines.
Following an investigation by municipal police (zabıta) and a review of security footage, the municipality issued a formal notice to the business. The notice stated that the practice violated fundamental rights, including personal liberty, security, property rights, and consumer legislation. The municipality also reported the matter to the Ministry of Trade.
Following the notification, the supermarket ended the practice. İsmail Can Ocak, General Coordinator of Sincan Municipality, confirmed that inspections showed the policy had been discontinued and stated that the municipality would continue to prevent practices that cause public embarrassment or infringe on citizen rights.
