Sindh Assembly debates administrative units amid rejection of provincial division

The Sindh Assembly held a marathon debate regarding the creation of new administrative units and the potential division of the province. While all major political parties involved rejected the idea of breaking up Sindh, they remained deeply divided over the necessity of new administrative units.

Ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) members unanimously opposed any division of the province. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah warned that decisions regarding Sindh’s future must reflect the wishes of its people and should not be discussed at unrelated forums or by outside interests. He emphasized that while administrative reforms and strengthening local government are priorities, these should remain separate from the issue of provincial division.

Opposition members from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) argued that the current four-province structure is insufficient to manage Pakistan’s population of 250 million. Opposition lawmakers accused the provincial government of using the spectre of provincial division to deflect criticism regarding bad governance, corruption, and failures in service delivery.
