Sindh provincial division and administrative debates

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has rejected calls for the division of the Sindh province, asserting that any decision regarding its territorial integrity rests solely with the elected members of the Sindh Assembly. Shah stated that the province would not be divided by ‘businessmen from Lahore,’ courts, or public rallies, but through formal legislative debate. He noted a history of assembly resolutions opposing such division and emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would defend provincial unity.

Following these statements, the Sindh Assembly held a marathon debate concerning the creation of new administrative units and the potential division of the province. While major political parties, including the PPP, rejected the breakup of Sindh, the assembly remained divided over administrative reforms.

Opposition members from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) argued that the current four-province structure is insufficient for managing Pakistan’s population. These lawmakers accused the provincial government of using the threat of provincial division to deflect criticism regarding corruption, bad governance, and failures in service delivery.
