Singapore announces 70,000 SGD family support package to boost birth rates

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has announced a major support package for families to combat a record-low fertility rate, which has fallen to 0.87 children per woman. This is significantly below the replacement level of 2.1.

The government plans to provide nearly 70,000 Singapore dollars per child until the age of 17. This includes a 10,000 dollar grant at birth, with additional funds allocated for medical and educational expenses. Other measures include annual child credits for those aged 1 to 16, reduced preschool fees, and extended parental leave.

The initiative comes as Singapore prepares to become a ‘super-aged’ society, with over 21% of its population aged 65 or older. While some citizens view the financial aid as a way to provide security for starting families, others remain concerned that high living costs and the time commitment required for child-rearing remain significant barriers that money alone may not solve.
