Singapore demographic crisis response
Overview
To address a record-low fertility rate of 0.87, the Singaporean government has announced the ‘SG Child Support Package’. The initiative aims to combat demographic decline and the country’s transition toward a ‘super-aged’ society.
The package provides approximately 70,000 Singapore dollars in total support per child until age 17. Specific components include a 10,000 dollar ‘Baby Gift’ for children born on or after April 1, 2027, 5,000 dollars in MediSave support, and a 5,000 dollar Child Development Account grant. Families will also receive annual Child Credits of 2,000 dollars from ages 1 to 16, totaling 32,000 dollars. At age 17, 10,000 dollars will be transferred to a Post-Secondary Education Account.
While the government intends to provide financial security for families, some citizens have expressed concerns that high living costs and the time commitments of child-rearing may persist as barriers despite the subsidies.
