Singapore announces S$70,000 per child support package

Singapore has announced the ‘SG Child Support Package’, a major financial initiative designed to combat the nation’s declining fertility rate, which hit a record low of 0.87 children per woman in 2025. Announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the National Day Rally, the package aims to provide sustained support for children from birth through age 17.

When combined with existing programs, total direct government support for each Singaporean child is expected to reach approximately S$70,000. The new package includes a S$10,000 ‘Baby Gift’ paid in two installments during the first year, S$32,000 in annual ‘Child Credits’ of S$2,000 from ages 1 to 16, and a S$10,000 top-up for post-secondary education accounts when the child turns 17. It also includes grants for Child Development Accounts.

Notably, the new scheme simplifies previous systems by providing equal support regardless of birth order. It also extends to children of unmarried parents, though certain specific benefits like the ‘Baby Bonus’ cash gift remain tied to marriage. Beyond direct cash, the government is increasing parental leave days, reducing childcare fees, and offering additional ballot opportunities for subsidized public housing to families with children.
