Singapore announces US$ 55,000 per child incentive to boost birth rates
Singapore has launched a new benefits package aimed at reversing a historic decline in birth rates. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the measures during his National Day speech, proposing incentives that could exceed US$ 55,000 per child until they reach 17 years of age.
The package includes approximately US$ 7,800 per birth, increased childcare subsidies, and new financial aid distributed throughout a child's upbringing. Additionally, the government plans to expand parental leave and provide easier access to subsidized public housing for families with children. The strategy shifts focus toward supporting the early years of a child's life rather than just the moment of birth.
This initiative follows a record low fertility rate in Singapore, which fell to 0.87 children per woman, down from 0.97 in 2024. This figure is significantly below the 2.1 replacement level required to maintain a stable population without immigration. Prime Minister Wong acknowledged that financial incentives alone may not be sufficient, noting that professional pressures, education costs, and delayed family planning remain significant barriers.
