Singapore expands free haze mask distribution to seniors
Singapore has launched a second round of free N95-equivalent mask distribution following a significant spike in air pollution. The government has expanded eligibility to include seniors aged 60 and above, lowering the previous age threshold of 67 to accommodate feedback from residents who do not hold Pioneer or Merdeka Generation cards.
Eligible residents can collect two masks each from community clubs or designated vending machines. Those who already collected masks during the first round are entitled to an additional two. Other qualifying groups include CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders, ComCare assistance recipients, Medical Fee Exemption Card holders, pregnant women, children aged seven to 16, and individuals with chronic respiratory or heart conditions.
Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu noted that while some retail outlets experienced temporary shortages due to increased demand, government stockpiles and retailer warehouses remain sufficient to replenish stocks. Authorities have encouraged citizens to collect masks while air quality is currently stable to prepare for potential future deterioration.
