Singapore to create new Western island for advanced industries

During the 2026 National Day Rally, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced long-term plans to transform Singapore’s outer islands by merging several landmasses to create a new “Western island.” This project aims to support a new generation of industries, including advanced manufacturing, power generation infrastructure, and defense needs.

The proposed reclamation area includes Pulau Semakau, Pulau Bukom, Pulau Sudong, and potentially Pulau Hantu, Pulau Jong, and Pulau Sebarok. This initiative follows the historical precedent of Jurong Island, which was created by merging offshore islands to establish a global energy and chemicals hub.

To support this new development, the government plans to build a second road link to Jurong Island and a new connection between Jurong Island and the upcoming Western island. The Prime Minister emphasized that these long-term planning efforts are designed to ensure economic resilience and energy security for future generations.
