Singapore strategic priorities and development plans

Overview

During the 2026 National Day Rally, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong outlined several strategic priorities for Singapore’s future development and regional role.

On the diplomatic front, Singapore intends to focus on strengthening ASEAN unity and deepening regional integration ahead of its chairmanship on January 1, 2027. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining global connections and serving as a trusted hub for finance, talent, and supply chains.

To address technological risks, the government plans to implement new guardrails for artificial intelligence and social media. This includes building international coalitions for AI safeguards and enforcing stricter age verification for social media platforms to protect youth.

Regarding infrastructure and economic resilience, the government announced plans to create a new ‘Western island’ by merging several landmasses, including Pulau Semakau and Pulau Bukom. This project is intended to support advanced manufacturing, defense, and power generation, following the model of Jurong Island. The initiative will include new road links to connect these industrial areas.
