Hermosillo sinkhole swallows pickup, injures motorcyclist

A large sinkhole opened on the Carlos Quintero Arce boulevard in Hermosillo, Sonora, after a 72‑inch sanitary pipe over 50 years old ruptured. The collapse caused a double‑cab pickup to fall into the hole while driver Alejandro Lizárraga Ávila attempted to aid a motorcyclist who had already been injured in a smaller dip. Lizárraga said the "pavement collapsed under my vehicle" and was rescued by bystanders using a rope; he escaped without injuries. The motorcyclist received treatment from Red Cross paramedics and was taken to a hospital. Municipal transit officials blocked the road, began safety assessments and pledged to repair the pipe and restore traffic.

Agua de Hermosillo confirmed the pipe failure as the cause and said repair work would be carried out promptly while monitoring the area for further risk.
