Sinop expands dengue control mutirão and begins Pneumo 20 vaccine for children

The municipality of Sinop, Brazil, continued its dengue‑prevention mutirão despite the dry season. Since 26 June the team visited eight neighborhoods, inspected 5,833 homes and eliminated 1,561 potential breeding containers, identifying 60 Aedes aegypti foci. Fifteen endemic‑control agents work on weekdays, urging residents to check water‑holding items weekly.

Sinop also started administering the new 20‑valent pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumo 20) on 10 June. The city received 645 doses from the state health department and integrated the vaccine into the infant schedule, using a transition scheme with the existing 10‑valent vaccine. Children receive Pneumo 20 at 2 months, Pneumo 10 at 4 months, and a Pneumo 20 booster at 12 months, with provisions for older children who missed earlier doses.

In Campo Bom, Rio Grande do Sul, health officials began the same Pneumo 20 rollout on 13 June after receiving 150 doses. The vaccination protocol mirrors Sinop’s, replacing the 10‑valent vaccine gradually and extending use to eligible infants, elderly or special‑needs groups as supply permits.
