Sintra shopping center closed due to health and safety concerns

Authorities have closed a shopping center in Tapada das Mercês, Sintra, following an inter-institutional operation. The closure was prompted by reports of severe hygiene, health, and safety issues, as well as the illegal use of retail spaces for residential purposes.

During the intervention, police discovered two individuals living in degrading conditions within the shops. One was a 71-year-old man found with visible wounds and physical fragility; he was transported to the Amadora/Sintra Hospital for medical evaluation due to suspected dehydration. The second individual was a woman previously identified by social services. Both were found in conditions deemed incompatible with minimum habitability and safety standards.

The operation involved multiple agencies, including the PSP Sintra Police Division, Sintra Municipal Police, Sintra Municipal Civil Protection, and the Sintra-Amadora Public Health Unit. The individuals involved have been referred for social assistance and appropriate housing support.
