Siracusa moves to sell historic Cinque Piaghe hospital
The municipality of Siracusa and the provincial health agency (ASP) have signed a joint protocol to coordinate the sale of the former Cinque Piaghe hospital, a landmark building in Ortigia. The agreement unifies the two owners’ shares, allowing a single valuation by the Revenue Agency and a public tender for the entire complex. Proceeds from the auction will be split equally between the city council and the ASP, with any procedural costs deducted thereafter.
The sale follows years of stalled attempts to find a buyer, hindered by fragmented ownership and heritage‑protection rules. Both entities have secured the necessary approvals from the Superintendence, and the transaction will be subject to the cultural‑heritage code, including possible pre‑emptive rights. Local officials, including councilor Paolo Cavallaro, have called for a broader discussion on the building’s future use, emphasizing cultural and public‑space considerations before any final disposal.
