Siracusa healthcare infrastructure developments

The healthcare landscape in Siracusa is undergoing significant structural changes involving both the disposal of historic assets and the development of new infrastructure.

To address the future of the landmark Cinque Piaghe hospital in Ortigia, the municipality of Siracusa and the provincial health agency (ASP) have signed a protocol to coordinate a joint sale. This agreement unifies ownership shares to allow for a single valuation and a public tender for the entire complex. The sale is subject to cultural heritage regulations and proceeds will be split equally between the city council and the ASP.

Simultaneously, plans for a new hospital facility are advancing. This project, declared of public utility, involves an investment exceeding 372 million euros, with approximately 95% of funding provided by the Italian state. Project leaders are currently engaging with local businesses to discuss regional impacts. Before construction begins—projected for late 2026 or early 2027—the project must undergo land expropriation, archaeological verifications, and the registration of financing decrees. The new facility is expected to open between 2030 and 2031.
