Sicily political landscape: leadership debates in Palermo and Siracusa

Political developments are unfolding across Sicily, with leaders addressing administrative challenges in Palermo and Siracusa. In Palermo, Mayor Roberto Lagalla stated that his coalition will evaluate its performance before deciding on a potential re-election. He highlighted recent infrastructure improvements, such as road paving and tram reconstruction, while noting that security concerns are being managed through inter-force coordination.

In Palermo, Azione leader Carlo Calenda criticized the Sicilian political system, calling for a ten-year government commission to dismantle the system of political preferences. He argued that the region fails to meet minimum service standards and suggested that public positions should be assigned through independent commissions and public tenders.

In Siracusa, Mayor Francesco Italia addressed the city's waste management crisis following judicial developments involving companies Tekra and Ris. Am. While noting the presence of many potential mayoral candidates, Italia emphasized that decisions regarding his successor are premature. Additionally, municipal councilor Giuseppe Casella has resigned his seat to be replaced by Francesco Ardita, though Casella will remain in the city administration.
