Sitia wildfire forces evacuations and emergency alerts in Crete

A large wildfire broke out in the Hone municipal unit of Sitia, Lasithi, on Sunday afternoon, September 20. The fire spread rapidly through low vegetation, fueled by winds of approximately 5 Beaufort and gusty conditions.

Authorities issued multiple emergency alerts via the 112 system. Residents in the Karydi area were ordered to evacuate toward Zakros. Later, residents in Kellaria, Adravastoi, Klisidi, Zarkos, and Azokeramos were instructed to remain on high alert.

Firefighting efforts have been significantly reinforced. Reports indicate that between 78 and 95 firefighters are on the scene, supported by multiple specialized hiking teams from the 3rd and 19th EMODE units. Ground operations involve dozens of fire engines, including water tankers from the Sitia Municipality. Aerial support, including two helicopters, assisted the operation until sunset, after which the focus shifted to ground crews due to darkness and difficult, inaccessible terrain. The fire front is reported to extend approximately two kilometers.
