SIU clears police in death of man held in Northumberland OPP custody

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded its investigation into the death of a 28-year-old man who died while in the custody of the Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Cobourg.

According to the SIU, the man was being held in a cell following an arrest for breaching a release order on May 25, 2026. During his detention, he experienced a seizure and fell from a cell bench. Paramedics were called to the scene, and the man was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

SIU Director Joseph Martino stated there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any police officer or custodian committed a criminal offence. The investigation found that officers responded with due care and promptly rendered assistance while awaiting medical professionals. The probe included an analysis of surveillance footage, body-worn cameras, and communication recordings.
