Rio Grande do Norte prison escape fuels security concerns
On the morning of 31 July 2026, eleven inmates escaped from the Penitenciária Rogério Coutinho Madruga in Nísia Floresta, part of the Greater Natal region of Rio Grande do Norte. Thirteen detainees dug a tunnel through the toilet, removed the fixture and used a rope made of sheets to climb the prison wall. Two of the escapees were recaptured outside the facility, while the remaining eleven remain at large.
