Overview

In late July 2026 Brazil saw two high‑profile prison breakouts. On 27 July, seven inmates escaped from the Ceresp Gameleira prison in Belo Horizonte by digging a hole and scaling the wall; four were quickly recaptured, leaving three at large. Four days later, on 31 July, thirteen detainees fled the Penitenciária Rogério Coutinho Madruga in Nísia Floresta after removing a toilet, tunnelling through the plumbing and climbing the outer wall with a rope made from sheets. Two escapees were seized on site and a third, Julianderson Francisco Nogueira, was captured later that day, leaving eleven fugitives.

The July 31 escape triggered a coordinated search by police, military, federal highway police and the municipal guard of Parnamirim, and prompted an administrative inquiry by SEAP into the tunnel preparation. Prison‑workers’ unions blamed staffing shortages, non‑functional cameras and outdated equipment. Gubernatorial candidates Álvaro Dias (PL), Allyson Bezerra (União) and Cadu Xavier (PT) condemned the breach as evidence of mis‑government and pledged stronger security measures.

By 4 August, four of the remaining fugitives—Thiago da Silva Maia Braga, Julianderson Francisco Oliveira da Silva, Diogo da Luz Silva and Isaac Deodato Rodrigues—had been recaptured by the Polícia Penal in cooperation with other forces, reducing the number at large to seven. The search and political scrutiny continue.
