SK Telecom suspends new 3G subscriptions to begin service phase-out

SK Telecom has announced the suspension of new subscriptions for its 3G mobile service, effective August 20, 2026. This move marks the beginning of a gradual phase-out of the 3G network, which the company has operated for 23 years since 2003.

The decision is driven by a continuous decline in 3G subscribers and traffic, the aging of 3G devices and equipment, and a broader shift toward next-generation LTE and 5G networks. The suspension applies to new subscriptions, number portability, and device changes (including USIM changes) for 3G devices and LTE devices that do not support HD Voice.

To assist customers during this transition, SK Telecom is offering several support programs. Customers can choose between free device replacements for specific LTE/5G models, device purchase subsidies of up to 380,000 KRW, or monthly fee discounts of up to 70% for 24 months. For customers over 65, the company will allow continued access to the ‘New Silver Plan’ (9,900 KRW per month) upon transitioning to LTE or 5G.

SK Telecom plans to apply for official service termination approval from the Ministry of Science and ICT. While the final shutdown date for the 3G network has not yet been determined, the company will continue to maintain the service using spare parts until the official termination.
