SK Telecom 3G service phase-out

SK Telecom has suspended new subscriptions for its 3G mobile service, effective August 20, 2026, marking the start of a gradual phase-out of the network it has operated since 2003. The company cited declining subscriber numbers, reduced traffic, and aging hardware as primary reasons for halting new subscriptions, number portability, and device changes for 3G handsets and LTE devices that do not support HD Voice.

To assist the transition, the provider is offering support programs including free device replacements for specific LTE/5G models, subsidies of up to 380,000 KRW, or monthly plan discounts of up to 70% for 24 months. Specific provisions have been established for elderly users (over 65) to maintain access to a ‘New Silver Plan’ (9,900 KRW per month) upon transitioning to LTE or 5G.

SK Telecom intends to seek formal service termination approval from the Ministry of Science and ICT. While a final shutdown date has not been determined, the company stated it will continue to maintain the service using spare parts until the official termination.
