Skincare experts discuss retinol use and skin barrier health
As seasonal changes occur, dermatological experts highlight the importance of skin barrier health and the strategic use of active ingredients like retinol.
Pharmacist Amanda Isabel Gonçalves notes that autumn is an ideal time to reintroduce retinol due to decreased solar exposure. Retinol is recognized for its ability to promote cell renewal, stimulate collagen production, and improve wrinkles and skin texture. However, she warns that applying excessive concentrations can lead to redness, itching, and dryness. She emphasizes that while retinol can be used year-round, daily sunscreen use remains essential.
Dr. Rocío Lajarín explains that sensations of dryness, tightness, or sudden reactivity may indicate an altered skin barrier. This barrier, composed largely of lipids like ceramides, acts as a shield to retain hydration and block external irritants such as pollution and bacteria. Factors like aging, sun exposure, and stress can weaken this shield, leading to microscopic cracks that allow moisture to escape and irritants to enter.
