Volkswagen and SAIC expand electric vehicle production in Spain

Automotive manufacturers are shifting production focus toward electric vehicles in Europe. At the Volkswagen Navarra plant in Landaben, Spain, production has officially commenced for the ID. Cross electric SUV. The facility is now capable of producing both electric and internal combustion models, including the Škoda Epiq, the T-Cross, and the Taigo.

In a separate development, the Chinese group SAIC Motor plans to establish its first European manufacturing presence in Ferrol, Spain. The plant is expected to produce the MG2, a compact electric vehicle, initially using CKD (completely knocked down) kits from China. This move aims to bypass EU tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars. The project involves an initial investment of 200 million euros and could create approximately 2,300 jobs, with operations targeted to begin in 2027 and reach full capacity by 2028.

The Škoda Epiq, which is also being produced in Landaben, is being introduced to various markets with multiple variants, including the Epiq 40, 40 Plus, and 40 Selection. The model is built on the MEB+ platform and is designed as an accessible entry point into the brand’s electric SUV lineup.
