Skoda automotive transition and model development

Overview

Skoda has released the Fabia 130, a special anniversary edition featuring a customized 1.5 TSI Evo2 engine. This model is noted as one of the final traditional ‘hot hatch’ models produced by the Volkswagen Group before the industry transition toward fully electric performance compacts.

Looking toward future electrification, CEO Klaus Zellmer indicated plans to develop an electric version of the Fabia to maintain a presence in the affordable, compact entry-level segment of the European market. While not an immediate project, the company is also evaluating the development of an electric station wagon, potentially as a successor to the Octavia Combi around 2030 or 2031, utilizing Volkswagen’s upcoming SSP architecture.

Expanding its electric portfolio, Skoda has introduced the Epiq, a compact B-SUV crossover built on the MEB+ platform. Measuring approximately 4.17 meters, the Epiq is designed to compete in the urban SUV segment against rivals such as the Renault 5 and various Chinese electric models. It serves as the brand’s first electric model to be manufactured at the Landaben plant in Navarra, Spain. The Epiq offers various configurations, including a high-performance version with 211 CV and a range of up to 440 km, aiming to provide an accessible entry point into the brand’s electric ecosystem following the Enyaq and Elroq.

Technical reviews of the Epiq highlight its efficiency and practicality, noting a spacious interior and a 475-liter boot despite its compact dimensions. As part of a long-term strategic shift, Skoda is also evaluating whether the Vision O concept might eventually replace or consolidate segments currently occupied by the Octavia and Superb as the brand moves toward an all-electric future.
