Skopelos named top Mediterranean cinematic destination

The Italian travel website TheWom Travel featured Skopelos among the Mediterranean’s most spectacular film‑inspired island destinations, citing its “cinematic radiance.” The island gained worldwide recognition as the primary filming location for the hit musical Mamma Mia!, where Kastani Beach hosted several iconic musical scenes and the cliff‑top Agios Ioannis Chapel was the setting for the movie’s wedding.

Despite the international exposure, the feature notes that Skopelos has preserved its authentic character, with white‑washed houses, pastel‑coloured buildings and vibrant shutters overlooking the Aegean. The municipality continues to promote the island through media campaigns, and Skopelos Tourism Councillor Ioanna Efstathiou said the goal is to build on the film’s legacy to offer diverse, high‑quality experiences year‑round.

The list also includes other Mediterranean islands such as Lampedusa, Linosa, Pantelleria, the Tremiti Islands, Salina and Ischia, all of which have hosted notable film productions and developed strong cultural identities.
