However, this international acclaim has brought environmental concerns to the forefront. Elafonisi beach, despite its high visitor ratings and status as a protected Natura 2000 area, is facing significant challenges due to overtourism. The high volume of visitors has led to extreme crowding during peak periods, which threatens local marine species and the integrity of the area's ecosystem. Furthermore, authorities have noted reports of visitors illegally removing pink sand as souvenirs, despite prohibitions designed to protect the area's unique characteristics.
