Skopje advances electric bus rollout and underground road projects
Skopje is undergoing significant urban infrastructure upgrades, including the modernization of its public transport system and the development of a major underground roadway.
A large-scale procurement project for electric buses is underway, with a consortium led by Ikarus Electric and EVN securing a contract to deliver 150 electric buses and 75 charging stations. Of these, 100 buses are designated for Skopje. To support this transition, the city is working with the Ministry of Transport and EVN to strengthen the electrical grid and install charging infrastructure in locations such as Gjorce Petrov and Avtokomanda.
Additionally, the city is progressing on an underground roadway project near the Limak complex. The first phase, covering the Kisela Voda section, was completed in 90 days. The project is expected to be fully operational by 2028 or early 2029, with subsequent phases focusing on the connection to the Limak entrance and the Nova Makedonija roundabout. Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski confirmed that the City of Skopje has the necessary capacity and funding, supported by the government, to complete these developments.
