Skopje's €70 million BRT system moves into implementation phase

Mayor Orce Gjorgievski announced that Skopje’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has entered the implementation stage after final coordination with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The €70 million loan from the EBRD will fund two BRT lines – east‑west and north‑south – along with low‑floor buses running on compressed natural gas or hybrid power, smart stations, passenger information systems and integration with the city’s traffic‑management system.

The mayor emphasized that the construction will not sacrifice existing boulevard greenery; new green spaces and horticultural landscaping are planned. The BRT initiative is part of a broader transport‑modernisation strategy that also includes introducing an urban train, purchasing 100 new city buses and optimising the existing bus network to create an integrated, modern public‑mobility system for Skopje.

"We have removed the obstacles and created the conditions for BRT to finally enter the realization phase," Gjorgievski said, adding that the project will deliver faster, safer, more reliable and environmentally friendly transport, reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.
