Skopje covered in thick smoke from landfill and regional fires
Thick black smoke is covering Skopje following a fire at a landfill near the Stenkovec sports airport. Stojanche Angelov, Director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, described the smoke as being as dense as an 'atomic bomb.' The fire involves accumulated waste and covers a large area, making containment difficult.
The situation is exacerbated by a separate fire in the Ramno locality of Skopska Crna Gora, which has been active for two days. Strong winds are carrying smoke and unpleasant odors from both the Stenkovec landfill and the Ramno fire toward the city of Skopje.
Emergency response efforts include Skopje firefighters, police helicopters, and approximately 30 members of the Army assisting in the Ramno area. Angelov noted that there are at least 30 open-field fires currently active across the country, which is an unusually high number for this time of year.
