Skopje floods trigger emergency response as streets become waterlogged

Heavy rain overwhelmed Skopje, inundating streets such as the Boris Trajkovski boulevard and causing severe traffic disruptions. Municipal authorities activated the city’s crisis headquarters, coordinating police, fire services, the water and sewage company, the civil protection center and public utilities including EVN. Residents were urged to report flooded yards, fallen trees and infrastructure damage, with contact numbers provided for each municipality. The flooding highlighted persistent shortcomings in storm‑water drainage and raised concerns about repeated, reactive emergency measures rather than preventive maintenance.

The city’s mayor confirmed that response teams would remain on standby through the night to address damage and assist affected citizens.
