Skopje advances its biggest wastewater treatment plant project

Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski announced that Skopje is rapidly building the country's largest and most modern wastewater treatment station, a key component of an ecological shield for the Vardar River. The complex includes around 60 facilities and is about 40 % complete, after an initial delay caused by incomplete administrative procedures, unresolved land expropriation and delayed payments. Under the agreement with the public utility “Water and Sewerage”, construction is scheduled to finish in the first half of 2028, followed by a two‑year testing phase ending in early 2030. The mayor said the plant will end decades‑long river pollution and provide a healthier environment for current and future generations.

In parallel, the city council approved a 40 million‑denar contract with the company Hydrotek to build roughly 30 technical water wells for irrigation of public green spaces. These wells will supply non‑potable water for park landscaping, reducing the use of drinking‑water reserves during summer droughts.
