Skopje storm injures over 30, damages infrastructure and triggers compensation claims

A powerful windstorm, classified as an "orkan" with gusts up to 134 km/h, struck Skopje and surrounding municipalities, toppling trees, roofs and causing widespread damage. More than 30 people were injured by falling trees and debris; 22 sought medical assistance, of whom two required hospital treatment and one underwent surgery. Health officials reported the majority of injuries were minor.

The storm damaged at least 117 motorbikes, 35 roofs, 189 trees, seven traffic lights and sparked five fires. Public buildings—including the State Prosecutor's Office, the Vili Vodno complex, the Petrovets airport police base and ministries of finance, agriculture and public prosecution—suffered damage. Municipal crisis teams activated hotlines for citizens to report losses, and local governments formed assessment commissions to evaluate damage and process compensation claims, as urged by Prime Minister Christian Mikovski.

Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to affected residents.
