Skopje urban rail test cuts travel time from Majari to city centre to five minutes

During a demonstration organized by the “Go Green” association at the Traffic for All – Skopje conference, an urban rail service travelled from Majari to Skopje’s central railway station in about five minutes, far faster than the approximately 65‑minute bus ride on the same route.

The trial highlighted the potential of the city‑rail project, which will connect the suburbs of Zelenikovo, Dračevë, Lisiče and the airport with the transport hub in the capital. The first phase, from Zelenikovo to Skopje, is 90.88 % complete and is scheduled for launch on 1 September, pending the delivery of a suitable rolling stock. Officials noted the rail line’s higher capacity and shorter travel times, while nearby residents voiced concerns about the location of a terminal and depot that could affect a local park.

Project directors emphasized that the new BRT system and upgraded railway service aim to shift commuters onto public transport and reduce growing urban traffic congestion.
