Skull bone marrow discovery offers new potential for brain cancer treatment

Researchers have discovered a new structure within the skull that may play a critical role in fighting brain cancer. According to a study published in the journal Nature, the skull bone marrow contains previously unknown centers of immune reactions specific to the brain.

Lead author and neuroimmunologist Jonathan Kipnis noted that the skull bone marrow acts as more than just a structural frame, functioning instead as a “safety barrier” in the early stages of brain cancer. While the discovery was made in mice, researchers believe there are indications that a similar structure exists in humans. Strengthening these immune centers could provide a new method for treating deadly brain tumors.

Historically, the immune systems of the central nervous system and the rest of the body were thought to be entirely separate. However, this research suggests a closer connection, as scientists identified small channels leading from brain tissue through the dura mater directly into the skull.
