Skull bone marrow identified as localized immune hub for the brain

Researchers have identified lymph node-like structures within the skull bone marrow that act as localized immune hubs for the brain. This discovery challenges the long-held scientific assumption that the brain is largely shielded from the immune system. Studies from Washington University School of Medicine indicate these structures serve as rapid first responders, detecting abnormal cells and initiating brain defense before distant lymph nodes can react.

Further research led by Harvard Medical School suggests these immune activities in the skull bone marrow may be linked to chronic pain and various neurological conditions. Specifically, elevated levels of the protein translocator protein (TSPO) have been observed near the skull bone marrow in individuals with migraines and visual aura. Scientists believe this activation might represent a fundamental neuroimmune response shared across diverse conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, depression, and autism.
