Skyguide faces operational crises and financial risks
Skyguide, the Swiss air traffic control provider, is facing significant operational and financial challenges due to recurring IT failures and software quality issues. These technical problems have led to flight delays and airspace restrictions, including a notable takeoff ban during the Bürgenstock Conference in June. The company is currently undergoing restructuring to save 51 million Swiss francs annually, which includes cutting 200 positions.
In addition to technical mismanagement, Skyguide faces potential legal and financial repercussions. Swiss International Air Lines is considering compensation claims, and a recent fee increase may violate EU law, potentially leading to claims exceeding 290 million Swiss francs. The company’s large-scale 'Virtual Center' project, intended to modernize infrastructure and reduce redundancies between its Geneva and Dübendorf centers, has seen its completion date pushed from 2024 to 2031.
Separately, Skyguide is scheduled to conduct measurement flights at Zurich Airport between August 24 and August 29, 2026. These flights, utilizing a Beechcraft King Air 350, are part of periodic checks to ensure the accuracy of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and radio beacons (VOR/DME).
