Skyguide operational and financial restructuring

Skyguide, the Swiss air traffic control provider, is navigating significant operational and financial instability. The company has faced recurring IT failures and software quality issues, resulting in flight delays and airspace restrictions. These technical challenges are compounded by financial risks, including potential compensation claims from Swiss International Air Lines and legal concerns regarding fee increases that may violate EU law.

To address these pressures and achieve annual savings of 51 million Swiss francs, Skyguide initiated a restructuring program. While initial estimates suggested up to 220 potential layoffs, a consultation process involving employees and unions resulted in a revised plan for 50 total job cuts. These reductions, consisting of 14 terminations this year and approximately 35 in spring 2027, will be supplemented by early retirements and natural staff turnover.

Additionally, the company plans to reorganize its executive management in early 2027, reducing the board from nine members to five. Despite the reduced number of layoffs, labor representatives have expressed concerns regarding increased workloads for remaining staff through 2028. Meanwhile, the company’s ‘Virtual Center’ modernization project has faced delays, with its completion date pushed from 2024 to 2031.
