Stewart Island named world's quietest destination by Unspoilt Index

The BookRetreats Unspoilt Index, which analyzed 100 islands globally, has identified Stewart Island in New Zealand as the quietest destination in the world. The index evaluates locations based on factors such as population density, road and air traffic, light pollution, and the preservation of natural coastlines to address the growing travel trend known as ‘quietcation’.

Stewart Island ranks first due to its minimal human presence—with just over 500 residents—and its status as home to the world’s southernmost Dark Sky Sanctuary, making it ideal for stargazing and viewing the southern lights.

In Europe, the Greek island of Anafi was named the quietest, ranking second globally. The index noted a sharp contrast in tranquility levels among popular destinations; for instance, Santorini ranked 99th out of 100 due to high levels of overtourism.
