Stewart Island ranked world's quietest destination
Overview
The BookRetreats Unspoilt Index has identified New Zealand’s Stewart Island as the quietest destination in the world. The index, which analyzed 100 islands globally, evaluates locations based on criteria including population density, road and air traffic, light pollution, and the preservation of natural coastlines.
Stewart Island achieved the top ranking due to its minimal human presence and its status as home to the world’s southernmost Dark Sky Sanctuary. In contrast, popular European destinations such as Santorini, Malta, Tenerife, and Ibiza ranked poorly due to high road density and overtourism.
The findings highlight a significant rise in the ‘quietcation’ travel trend, with global searches for ‘quiet destinations’ increasing by 1,268 per cent year on year. The study, which utilized insights from silence researcher Olga V. Lehmann, noted that 56 per cent of surveyed travelers are seeking retreats in nature.
