Slack launches Slack Code for collaborative AI programming
Slack, a subsidiary of Salesforce, has launched ‘Slack Code,’ a new feature designed to transform AI-assisted programming from a solo activity into a collaborative team experience. The tool allows users to integrate AI coding agents directly into Slack channels by simply mentioning them in a conversation.
When an agent is tagged, the system automatically generates a dedicated ‘code channel’ for the specific task. These channels include specialized tabs for viewing the conversation, the agent’s work plan, code diffs, and live HTML previews. This setup enables team members—including non-developers like product managers—to monitor progress, provide feedback, and steer the agent in real time.
To ensure security and oversight, Slack Code requires human approval for high-stakes actions, such as merging code into production environments. Once a task is completed, the channel is automatically archived, though a searchable audit log remains available for future review.
At launch, the service supports several major AI agents, including Anthropic’s Claude Code, Cognition’s Devin, GitHub Copilot, and Vercel’s agents. Support for OpenAI’s ChatGPT is expected in the near future. The feature is available across all Slack plans, though users must maintain their own separate subscriptions for the individual AI agent services used.
