Slack launch of collaborative AI coding tools

Overview

Slack has introduced ‘Slack Code,’ a feature designed to facilitate collaborative software development between human teams and AI agents. The tool allows users to tag coding agents—such as Anthropic’s Claude Code, Cognition’s Devin, or GitHub Copilot—directly within chat conversations to tackle tasks like fixing bugs, adding features, or refactoring code.

When an agent is summoned, the system automatically creates a dedicated ‘Code Channel.’ These channels include specialized tabs for viewing the conversation, the agent’s work plan, code diffs, and live previews of the work. This environment is intended to be “multiplayer,” allowing developers, product managers, and designers to review code, provide feedback, and approve changes in real time.

To ensure security and oversight, the system requires explicit human approval for high-stakes or sensitive operations, such as merging code into production environments or modifying infrastructure. While the Slack Code feature is available across all plans, access to the specific AI agents is managed separately by their respective providers. Integration for OpenAI’s ChatGPT is expected in the near future.
