Sleep apnea care evolves through wearable technology and new diagnostics
The landscape of sleep apnea care is shifting toward more personalized and technologically integrated approaches. Consumer wearable devices are increasingly capable of monitoring breathing patterns and nighttime oxygen levels, helping users identify symptoms that require clinical attention.
While Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) remains a standard therapy, patient adherence remains a challenge, with reports suggesting nearly half of patients may discontinue use within the first month due to discomfort or adjustment issues. This has led to an expansion of therapeutic options, including surgical technologies and pharmaceutical interventions. Notably, the FDA approved tirzepatide (Zepbound) in 2024 for adults with obesity and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea.
In the realm of medical entrepreneurship, Huxley Medical is developing a point-of-care device called SANSA. Created by Georgia Tech alumnus Chris Lee, the wearable chest patch measures nine physiological channels to help doctors simultaneously diagnose sleep apnea and related cardiovascular diseases. The device is designed for home use, automatically uploading data to a cloud-based system to facilitate faster detection.
