Sleep awareness rises but professional consultation remains low
Despite growing awareness of sleep as a critical component of long-term health, a significant gap exists between public concern and professional medical consultation. A Resmed survey of 30,000 people revealed that while 53% of respondents rank sleep as the most important behavior for a healthy life, only 23% have sought professional help for sleep issues.
Many individuals live for years without a diagnosis for conditions such as sleep apnea, often because sleep quality is sacrificed to meet work or family demands. People frequently wait until exhaustion severely interferes with daily life before seeking medical advice.
Technology is playing an increasing role in sleep awareness. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 48% of U.S. adults have used a sleep tracker, an increase from 35% in 2023. While these devices help users monitor restfulness, experts note that increased data visibility does not always help individuals recognize when poor sleep has become a chronic medical issue.
