Sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm impacts on health

Research highlights growing concerns regarding sleep deprivation and its physiological impacts. In France, approximately one-third of adults sleep fewer than six hours per night, and one in three suffers from chronic insomnia. Sleep is a critical physiological process organized into 90-minute cycles—including light, deep, and REM sleep—which are essential for tissue repair, memory consolidation, and cognitive function. Interrupting these cycles can lead to impaired decision-making, weakened memory, and slowed reflexes.

In Belgium, the average sleep duration is reported at six hours and 38 minutes, significantly below the recommended eight hours. Studies suggest gender-based differences in sleep patterns; women may require more sleep and naturally have slightly shorter circadian rhythms due to hormonal and temperature influences. This can lead to a “social jetlag,” where natural sleep-wake cycles conflict with work or school schedules, resulting in increased fatigue and anxiety. Experts suggest that behavioral interventions, such as maintaining consistent sleep schedules and optimizing bedroom temperature between 16 and 19°C, are often more effective than medication.
