Sleep experts suggest wearing socks to bed may improve sleep quality

Medical professionals suggest that wearing socks to bed on cold nights may help individuals fall asleep faster and maintain better sleep quality. While seemingly counterintuitive, the practice is grounded in the body's biological processes for temperature regulation.

As the body prepares for sleep, it naturally seeks to lower its core temperature to signal the brain to increase melatonin production. This is achieved through distal vasodilation, a process where blood vessels in the extremities, such as the hands and feet, widen to release heat. By warming the feet with socks, the body can more effectively dissipate heat through these 'vents,' leading to a drop in core temperature.

Experts from institutions including the Cleveland Clinic, Stanford Healthcare, and Kaiser Permanente note that while this is a low-risk method rather than a definitive cure, it can be particularly effective for individuals whose feet run cold.
