Sleep hygiene and the psychological impact of rest obsession
Experts are providing new perspectives on sleep hygiene and the psychological pressures of rest. Regarding bedding, research suggests that for the general population without allergies or asthma, changing sheets every week is not a strict medical necessity. While sleep expert Lindsay Browning recommends a frequency of once a week or every two weeks for those with sensitivities, studies indicate that high washing temperatures are more effective at breaking the life cycle of dust mites than frequent sheet changes.
Psychologist Roser Gort warns that an increasing obsession with achieving the ‘perfect sleep’ can actually prevent restful rest. She notes that the modern drive for productivity has extended into sleep, where people use wearable devices to obsessively monitor their rest. Gort suggests that this commercialized focus on measuring sleep can lead to self-imposed pressure that undermines sleep quality.
