Sleep pattern changes linked to mortality and memory loss
Recent research highlights the significant link between sleep patterns and health outcomes. A study published in Communications Medicine, involving 704 women in the United States with an average age of 82.5, identified associations between changes in sleep patterns and increased mortality risk, including cardiovascular mortality. Researchers noted three primary patterns: a stable group with minimal changes, a group showing nocturnal sleep deterioration and increased daytime sleep, and a group experiencing increased sleep both day and night. While the study does not prove direct causality, these shifts may serve as early indicators of declining health.
In a separate finding regarding cognitive health, research suggests that moderate physical exercise may mitigate the memory impairments caused by sleep deprivation. A study involving 88 healthy young adults demonstrated that 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as cycling, before a short night of sleep could counteract the negative effects on hippocampus-dependent memory. This is particularly relevant as sleep deprivation disrupts the brain's ability to transfer recent information into long-term memory during deep sleep stages.
